Naerwell

Naerwell is a small port city along the northern coast of the Inner Sea. Situated close to the elves, this is one of the few human centric cities where you will find more than one elf within the walls at a time, and in this case, a few notable ones.

Military – As per the treaty of the Free Cities, Naerwell only maintains enough of a city Guard to protect itself and maintain order. Naerwell also maintains a small fleet of ships to police the shipping lanes and keep piracy to a minimum.

High stone walls ring the City of Naerwell, protection from the savage sea storms as well as the savage beasts and monsters that still roam the lands beyond those walls. Naerwell is built for functionality. Most of it’s buildings are squat and square, with pitched roofs to protect against sea storms as well as mounting winter snows. The majority of the city’s structures are wooden; stone can be had from the hills and mountains, but the cost these days for labor is prohibitive. Early buildings, built when the walls were, often have stone bases, as stone was cheap and plentiful. Only near the central docks, and along the main ways, is any effort made to beautify the architecture, and even here such efforts are generally limited to cleaning and whitewashing. Only the main streets are paved in stone, the majority of streets are simply hard packed earth. Muddy ruts and turned stones are a regular hazard.

Naerwell, like other port cities, developed a mish-mash of cultural styles as a by-product of its function. Along the waterfront homey pubs stand shoulder to shoulder with exotic restaurants and shops hawking wares from far and wide.
