The Shattered Lands
When the Moradin created the Dwarves, he made many creatures before the Dwarf, finding flaws in each he tossed them aside, stopping only when he Made the first Dwarf. His castoffs include the duegar or dark dwarves, as well as goblins and kobalds. Never imply a Dwarf is related to any of those other races or you are likely to find your head cleaved in two. Clan Battlerager guards a great portal in their underground kingdom, through which legends tell they came to this world. After entering, fleeing from some terrible Enemy, the portal closed behind them. They Guard it now in case the Enemy should ever appear, but also in the hopes of one day finding a way back to wear-ever they once came from.
Most Dwarves prefer their mountain holes to the wide world, but some seak adventure beyond their gates. Dwarves have been known to settle as blacksmiths and barkeeps, or travel as mercenaries seeking a challenge or gold. Or some, like Theobold Coinhammer have reasons more personal. Regardless of why, impeding a dwarf in anything is dangerous to your health.
The size of the Dwarven kingdom is unknown, the only portion the surface realm sees is Kaer ‘Nwegin, a Dwarven fortress far from the lofty heights of the Dragonspire’s (the impressive mountain range dividing the continent in two). The dwarves maintain no lands around the fortress, instead seeming to rely on trade to sustain them. The Human city of Miirym, situated on the coast of the Orrick Sea, in the foothills of White Face Mountain, and at the mouth of the Miirym River, has grown large since trade opened between the two people. The fortress is located in the southern face of White Face Mountain. 35 years ago there was a great rumble and the southern face of the mountain fell away, crushing settlements located nearby. When the dust settled, there was an enormous stone doorway protruding from the new mountain face. The dwarves came forth and cleared the footsteps of debris, and opened up shop. The sounds of pounding hammers have pealed through the peak ever since.
